Online Course

Overview

This one-hour, online intermediate-level course, developed in collaboration with the Opioid Response Network (ORN), uses real-world case studies to help medical professionals strengthen their clinical judgment in treating opioid use disorder. Through three scenario-driven case studies, learners will explore challenges related to access, stigma, co-occurring conditions, and care delivery across different populations and environments, with a focus on rural communities.

The target audience for this intermediate-level course includes: Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Associates, Nurses, Pharmacy and Pharmacy Technicians, Social Workers, and other health care professionals with experience in addiction medicine.

This activity addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Professionalism, and Systems-based Practices

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Employ strategies to overcome barriers in providing OUD treatment in clinical settings.
  2. Recognize and address stigmatizing interactions and perceptions to break down stigma and improve patient care for individuals with substance use disorders.
  3. Apply strategies to manage care for patients with a special focus on rural settings with opioid use disorder, considering populations with unique clinical needs, and access to resources.
  4. Identify unique clinical needs to develop treatment plans for individuals with opioid use disorder.

The Opioid Response Network (ORN) is a program funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). It is led by the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) in collaboration with a large national coalition. This coalition forms the Opioid Response Network to provide free training and education to address opioid, stimulant and all substance use disorders.

Frank Del Real

MD, FASAM

Dr. Frank Del Real is the Medical Director at Central Wyoming Counseling Center and Clinical Adjunct Professor and Visiting Attending at the University of Wyoming Family Practice Program. Previously, he was the Medical Director at Wyoming Recovery. Dr. Del Real attended medical school at the University of California, San Diego where he received his M.D. degree. He then completed his residency in Psychiatry at Harbor, UCLA Medical Center. He has practiced as a psychiatrist for 31 years. In addition to his extensive experience in psychiatry he is also Board Certified in addiction medicine. He is one of a few physicians in Wyoming that provides out-patient based opioid treatment for those suffering from opioid use disorders. He is an active member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) where he serves as chairman of the membership committee of the Northwest chapter. He is the immediate past-president of the Northwest Chapter. He was also a member of the ASAM Marijuana Task Force that contributed to the development of the Marijuana Position Paper for ASAM.

Robert Sherrick

MD, FASAM

Dr. Robert Sherrick, MD, FASAM, is Chief Medical Officer for Community Medical Services, a company that serves patients through its 30 Opioid Treatment Programs in 8 different states.  Dr. Sherrick completed medical training and residency in Internal Medicine at George Washington University.  After 5 years on the faculty at George Washington,he moved to Montana to join a private practice in Internal Medicine.  Since 1994, Dr. Sherrick has worked at an inpatient addiction treatment facility, Pathways, where he has treated all forms of Substance Use Disorders and has served as the CD Medical Director. Dr. Sherrick has been providing Medication Assisted Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder since 2003, initially in an office setting using buprenorphine and naltrexone.  In 2009, Dr. Sherrick closed his private practice and moved to VA Montana.  Over the next 7 years at VA Montana he developed a state-wide MAT program that was one of the first uses of telemedicine for providing MAT to rural areas.  Dr. Sherrick has been working for Community Medical Services since 2010, providing MAT services with methadone, buprenorphine, and naloxone as well as serving as Northern Medical Director.  He has been Chief Medical Officer for the last year.  He is currently the President of the Northwest Chapter of ASAM. He is Board Certified in Addiction Medicine through the American Board of Preventative Medicine.

Daniel Nauts

MD, FASAM

Dr. Nauts, MD, FASAM completed his undergraduate and medical education at the University of Michigan and joined an internal medicine group practice in Bellingham, Washington.  He left general internal medicine to develop his Addiction Medicine practice; since that time, he has been instrumental in the creation of 3 inpatient programs for those suffering with substance use and co-occurring disorders, outpatient SUD programs, and medication assisted treatment services.
