Overview
This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 56th Annual Conference addresses practical strategies for implementing and sustaining Addiction Consultation Services, while exploring challenges and variations across diverse clinical settings.
Hospitals are vital components of the treatment system for substance use disorders. Join our interactive workshop for healthcare professionals to explore the opportunities and challenges of implementing hospital-based addiction consultation services. Gain practical insights into delivering Addiction and Consultation Services, addressing key challenges, equipping you to enhance addiction care in your institution.
The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.
This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Practice-based Learning and Improvement, Systems-based Practice.
This session addresses the following IPEC Competencies: Interprofessional Communication, Teams and Teamwork.
Learning Objectives
- Upon completion, participants will be able to develop practical ideas for implementing or improving Addiction Consultation Services in their own institutions

- Click Complete Post Test to answer multiple choice questions. Participants will have 10 attempts to pass and must answer 4 out of 5 questions correctly.
- Click Complete Evaluation to provide valuable activity feedback. Scroll down on all questions as there may be answer options that expand past the size of the window.
- Click the button Claim Medical Credits in the box titled Claim Credits & Certificate. Choose the type of credit and click submit. Click the button View/Print Certificate to save or print your certificate. You can view/print your certificate at any time by visiting the ASAM eLearning Center, clicking Dashboard, and clicking Transcript/Achievements.
- For Pharmacists ONLY: Complete the task entitled "Enter Pharmacist CPE Monitor Information (Pharmacists Only)". Pharmacists must claim credit and provide their eProfile ID and Birthdate via the Pharmacist CPE Monitor Information survey within 30 days of completing the activity. Itai Danovitch
MD, MBA, FAPA, DFASAM
Itai Danovitch, MD, MBA, FAPA, DFASAM is the Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He earned his bachelor's degree from UC Berkeley, and his medical doctorate from UCLA. He completed psychiatry residency at Columbia, an addiction psychiatry fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and a Master of Business Administration at the UCLA Anderson School of Management. Prior to his current role, he served as Director of Addiction Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship at Cedars-Sinai. His current research is funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). He is the author of over 60 articles and chapters, and co-editor of two books: Addiction—Psychiatric Clinics of North America, and The Assessment and Treatment of Addiction—Best Practices and New Frontiers.
Dr. Danovitch currently served as Director At Large on the ASAM Board of Directors, and is now serving as Region II Director. In addition, he serves on the Conference Planning Committee and Criteria Strategy Committee. He is a past President of the California Society of Addiction Medicine, where he served on numerous committees over the years, including the Board of Directors, Public Policy, Communications, Education, and Integration and Access to Systems of Care. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, and Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. In 2016, he was appointed by the Governor of California to serve as a Commissioner on the State Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and three kids.

Stephen Ryzewicz, MD, FACP, DFASAM

Baystate Medical Center, Springfield MA
Stephen J. Ryzewicz, MD, DFASAM, FACP is the Medical Director for the inpatient Addiction Consultation Service at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine and in Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine. He is an Academic Hospitalist and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School. Dr. Ryzewicz is part of the faculty of the UMass Chan Medical School/Baystate Medical Center Residencies in Internal Medicine and Medicine/Pediatrics. He is a Co-Investigator for the START Trial and served as the Addiction Medicine Specialist for patients enrolled at the Baystate Medical Center site in Massachusetts. He is a Past President and CME Chair for the Massachusetts Society of Addiction Medicine, a past member of the ASAM Medical Specialties Action Group and currently is the Vice-Chair of the ASAM Distinguished Fellows Committee.

Sergio Huerta, MD, FASAM, is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of New Mexico (UNM) School of Medicine and the Medical Director of UNM Hospitals' Addiction Medicine Consult Service. He also serves as the Western Region Chief Medical Officer for Baymark Health Services. Dual board-certified in Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine, Dr. Huerta is a dedicated advocate for advancing substance use disorder treatment and research.

Allison Ober, PhD
Senior Behavioral Science Researcher
RAND
Allison J. Ober, MSW, PhD (UCLA Department of Social Welfare, School of Public Affairs) is a Senior Behavioral Science Researcher at RAND. Dr. Ober has worked in substance use disorder (SUD) research for 25 years. Her recent work has focused on implementing and improving evidence- based treatments in community health and mental health settings for people with substance use disorders. She is currently Principal Investigator of a NIH-funded multisite cooperative agreement examining use of a hospital-based collaborative care team to help patients initiate medication for opioid use disorder in public hospitals and link to treatment in the community after discharge and a study funded by the Foundation for Opioid Response Efforts (FORE) that aims to improve uptake of evidence-based treatment for people with co-occurring mental health conditions and opioid use disorder who receive care in public mental health settings.

Karen Osilla, PhD
Associate Professor
Stanford University
Dr. Osilla is an Associate Professor in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford and a licensed clinical psychologist. She conducts health services research with a focus on delivering substance use services to underserved populations using innovative solutions that decrease health access disparities. Dr. Osilla has received funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) and has published over 100 publications on this work. Dr. Osilla has been conducting addictions research since 2006 and has been involved in over a dozen clinical trials evaluating cognitive behavioral therapy, collaborative care, and motivational interviewing interventions (web and in-person) for mental health and substance use disorders among youth, adult, military, family members, and other hard-to-reach populations.

ASAM has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1.25 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. Pharmacists
