Overview

The ASAM Fundamentals of Addiction Medicine is an 8-hour course designed for healthcare providers new to the field of addiction medicine who care for patients at risk for or with addiction. 

Addiction remains a significant global challenge, leading to substantial financial burdens and loss of life. However, effective treatments exist to help patients recover. This course equips participants with essential knowledge and skills to screen, diagnose, treat, and refer patients with addiction—many of whom have co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions.

Designed to be interactive and case-based, this course provides practical strategies to help primary care and other healthcare providers recognize and manage addiction. By translating the signs and symptoms of addiction into actionable treatment approaches, participants will gain confidence in improving patient outcomes.

The target audience for this beginner level course include: physicians, nurse practitioners/nurses, physician assistants, counselors, and other healthcare providers.  Clinicians who see patients with addiction in primary care, emergency/urgent care, treatment center, or general psychiatry settings.

The ACGME competencies include: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Practice-based Learning and Improvement, Interpersonal and Communication Skills.

This online course contains the following modules: 

  • Module 1: An Introduction to Addictive Disorders 
  • Module 2: The Clinical Manifestations of the Neurobiology of Addiction
  • Module 3: A Brief Overview of Motivational Interviewing Basics
  • Module 4: Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)
  • Module 5: Identifying Unhealthy Substance Use: Assessment
  • Module 6: Treating Substance Use Disorders with Medication and Counseling

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify one's own feelings and attitudes that promote or prevent therapeutic responses to patients with substance use disorders.
  • Apply the philosophy of harm reduction to enhance patient centered care for people with substance use disorders.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of the neurobiological changes that occur during addictions.
  • Use motivational interviewing to enhance patient’s readiness to change unhealthy behaviors.
  • Use validated patient screening tools to detect substance use and interpret a spectrum of results.
  • Conduct substance use assessments using the DSM 5 criteria and including a biopsychosocial approach.
  • Offer evidence-based pharmacotherapy and behavioral interventions that are appropriate to specific substances and usage patterns.

DEA Education Requirement

As an accredited organization named in Section 1263 of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, ASAM certifies that completion of this course meets the DEA requirement for 8 hours of education on substance use disorder(s).

Dr. Elizabeth Salisbury-Afshar, an Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, specializes in addiction medicine, preventive medicine/public health, and family medicine. Her work focuses on increasing access to evidence-based addiction treatment and harm reduction services. With over a decade of experience in federally qualified health centers, her clinical work focuses on supporting with medically underserved populations. Dr. Salisbury-Afshar is actively involved with ASAM, serving as Vice Chair of the Medical Education Council, a member of the Conference Planning Committee, and as ASAM's representative on the AMA Substance Use and Pain Task Force.

Trina Fullard

MA, CCS, LCAS

Trina Fullard serves as the Chief Program Officer at Charlotte Rescue Mission, overseeing clinical programming for various programs.  She is a Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist and Certified Clinical Supervisor in North Carolina. With extensive experience in adolescent care and substance use disorder treatment, she has worked at the Marriott Foundation, Greenbriar Treatment Center, and McLeod Addictive Disease Center. Trina graduated from Washington and Jefferson College and the University of Maryland, College Park. She actively participates in community engagement through numerous councils and committees, including the ASAM Fundamentals of Addiction Medicine Planning Committee.

Kirk Moberg

Kirk Moberg

MD, PhD, DFASAM

Kirk Moberg, MD, PhD, DFASAM is a graduate of and Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine and Psychiatry at the University of Illinois College of Medicine.  Trained in Internal Medicine he practiced in the field of Addiction Medicine for over 25 years and served as medical director of three addiction treatment centers, most recently at the Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery in the Unity Point Health System.  He is certified by both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Preventive Medicine-Addiction Medicine and is certified as a Medical Review Officer.  In addition to the Fundamentals of Addiction Medicine course, Dr. Moberg teaches the Pain Management and Opioids: Balancing Risks and Benefits and the Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder courses for ASAM.

Lipi Roy

Lipi Roy

MD, MPH, FASAM

Dr. Lipi Roy is an internal medicine and addiction medicine physician, keynote speaker, YouTube health show host, frequent media health commentator and founder of SITA MED. During the pandemic, Dr. Roy served on the frontlines as Medical Director of the Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice (MOCJ) Transitional Housing Sites and COVID Isolation and Quarantine Sites for Housing Works in New York City. She also treated patients with opioid use disorder at a harm reduction clinic in the Bronx. Dr. Roy also serves as a clinical assistant professor at NYU Langone Health. 

Before moving to New York, Dr. Roy was a primary care doctor to Boston's homeless population, among whom drug overdose was the leading cause of death. She also served as an attending physician at Massachusetts General Hospital and as faculty at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Roy completed her medical and master's in public health degrees at Tulane University, followed by residency training in internal medicine at Duke Medical Center.

Dr. Roy actively merges her passion for medicine with traditional and social media to educate and empower the public to make healthy decisions. She is a Forbes contributor and former MSNBC and NBC News Medical Contributor.
